Instagram engagement rate, explained
Engagement rate shows how much of an audience interacts with a post. Here is the formula, what it leaves out, and how Hexrate tracks it every day for your account and for any creator you audit.

(Likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100
That is the follower-based engagement rate most calculators use, and a reasonable starting point. It leaves out saves, shares and reel plays, and one viral post can distort an average. Our guide covers the formula, the reach-based version and a simple calculator you can use by hand.

Tracked for you every day
Pulse reads your account every day and counts reel plays, so a reel-heavy account is not judged as if it only posted photos. It ranks your best posts against your own typical post and shows the hour your audience actually responds.

Check a creator before you pay
Discover’s creator audit shows engagement history for any public profile, with a profile health score, audience countries and content mix. Every plan includes audits: 100 a month on Solo, 1,500 on Pro and 3,000 on Agency.

Engagement rate, answered
Add up the likes and comments on a post, divide by the account’s followers and multiply by 100. For your own account, dividing by reach instead of followers gives a truer picture, because reach only counts the people who saw the post.
It depends on account size: smaller accounts usually see higher rates than large ones. Compare an account with others of a similar size in its niche rather than with one universal benchmark.
Our guide to calculating engagement rate includes a simple calculator: enter likes, comments and followers and it does the math. Inside Hexrate, engagement rate is calculated automatically for your account every day and for every creator you audit.
Once a day. Hexrate takes a daily snapshot of your account and of every competitor you track, so you see the trend, not a single number.
